Sri Maha Periyava used to chant Hari Nama every morning.  A student observed this. Maha Periyava had holy ash on his forehead, rudraksha around his neck,  which were indications of Shaivism. Be that as it may, here he was reciting the name of Sri Hari.  What was this?  The kid asked Sri Maha Periyava himself.  A vaidika who was close by admonished the kid.  "You should not address Maha Periyava in this way."  Sri Maha Periyava said , "Don't reprimand the kid. Let him voice his confusion.  I will answer him."  The kid rehashed his query. Sri Maha Periyava gave the kid a clarification.  "Creation, safeguarding, and annihilation are the three fold assignments.  Sri Hari Vishnu is the preserver. Once  way back in 1940s or 50s someone was interviewing Maha Periyavaar. That gentleman recorded the interview using a tape recorder. Periyavaa then posed a question. “Does anyone know which is the oldest known tape recorder?” Nobody was able to answer. Then Maha Periyavaa asked another question. “How did Vishnu Sahasranamam come to us?” Someone said Bheeshma gave it to us. All agreed. Then Maha Periyavaa posed another query . “When all were listening to Bheeshma on the battlefield, who took notes at Kurukshetra?” Again silence. Maha Periyavaar explained… When Bheeshma was glorifying Krishna with Sahasranamam Everyone was looking at him including Krishna and Vyasa. After he finished the 1000 Namas all opened their eyes. The first to react was Yudhistirar. He said, ‘Pithamaha has chanted 1000 glorious names of Vasudeva. All of us listened but none of us have noted it down. The sequence is lost’. Once Sri Maha Periyava was camping in Mylapore and it was Pradosham day. He was suffering from high fever. It must have been about 2 o’ clock in the afternoon and there was no sign of Periyava recovering. Devotees who had turned up in large numbers to watch Him perfom Abhishekam and Pradosha Pooja to Lord Shiva were worried about His health. Perhaps they felt there was no way Periyava would recover that day.
